Moving forward; which way?

On the news tonight I saw a segment of a lady celebrating her 109th birthday. What an achievement! They were talking of how she survived the pandemic of Spanish Flu in 1918. She reminisced of wearing masks through that time. What a memory for that age! The point being made is that this pandemic isn’t the first; and the way the human race is going it will not be the last. Hopefully in my lifetime we will not see another.

I was shown a newspaper clipping the other day where the writer (I think it was a Christian paper) was writing of messages sent to him. In these, Christians were sending him scriptures to support the prophecies through the Bible foretelling of this pandemic. The point the writer was making is the folly of taking scriptures to tell the story of what suits your mindset of the time. It is so easy to do that, but if you read the scriptures in context you get the truth. But regardless of our view point of whether this pandemic is from God, or judgement from God, or one of those human tragedies because of the sinful nature of human beings we need to seek and search the scriptures to daily and continually build our personal relationship with God. We will only ever move forward in His light, in His guidance. Any other method will only have us floundering around in the dark and in our own strength. We are reminded over and over again through the Bible how God’s Word is truth and we should always treat His Word as truth. Psalm 25:5 “Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Saviour, and my hope is in you all day long.”  Isaiah 45:19 “I, the Lord, speak the truth; I declare what is right.” And so we could quote many other scriptures but our friend Robert Voigt has provided the message for this week.

I was recently given a couple of books by a friend who realised he had duplicate copies and thought of me and so the books were sent via a couple of people and eventually arrived. One of them was written by George Beverley Shea; you may remember that he sang at the Billy Graham Crusades around the world for many years. This book is designed as a devotional with the words of a hymn, followed with a short story of George’s connection with the hymn and concludes that part with a devotional and prayer. How George was privileged when he met some of the hymn writers and learned straight from them what inspired the writing of those wonderful words. Other hymn writers he was able to visit their roots and there memorials. What amazing experiences and how fortunate that he wrote this book to share those times. How privileged I am to have been given this book.

As our world changes, maybe never to return to what we had before, let’s encourage each other to hold fast to our faith and our relationship with our loving heavenly Father.

Looking forward.

There’s the wonder of sunset at evening, The wonder of sunrise I see; But the wonder of wonders that thrills my soul Is the wonder that God loves me. (Words and music by George Beverly Shea © 1956 Word Music Inc) That song goes on with a chorus and more verses; but what a beautiful song of worship to our steadfast and unchangeable Father God.

As we move forward from the COVID-19 we see good news, not such good news, optimism and that optimism put on slow down. It is interesting how things can change dramatically so quickly. The good news is that here in SA we are still making progress with the controls of the virus. Our Chief Medical Officer is still encouraging scale back of our restriction – but with caution. And the advice of caution is well justified with the sad news from Victoria where the virus is running badly for them. Our hearts and prayers go to that state (even though they look down on us) and our State Government are offering assistance to them. Many of us have friends or relatives in Victoria and that heightens our concerns. Let’s not forget to continually pray for them, and yes, for our whole nation. While the virus is uncontrolled in Victoria it potentially puts our whole nation at further risk of the dreaded second wave. I always get excited when I pray and see God answering, often quite quickly. What a great God of wonders, Hallelujah!

At times when we so much need to see God’s hand across our nation I think of 2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.  How we need healing on many fronts – the COVID-19 virus, droughts, floods, devastating fires, our devastated economy from the virus, domestic violence, drug addictions and we could go on, but that is for you to do for yourself. One step forward for God’s people can also be shown in Psalm 25:4-5 Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Saviour, and my hope is in you all day long. Our God is very close and relational with each of us all day every day; he doesn’t even take a coffee break and leave us alone for half a second. What a great God of wonders, Hallelujah!

This is now 14 weeks since our churches were required to close for a temporary time span. At that time we were potentially looking at possibly six months of lockout. We are only halfway into that and we are back having meetings and services (some of us). I also think of Christians in some other countries where they rarely get to have that worship and fellowship with other Christians because it is against the law, and a great risk of death. How we are privileged in this country, yet many of us don’t fully appreciate it.

Keep praying for each other, and you can phone someone else to encourage them and yourself. Until we meet face to face, rejoice in the Lord always.

Moving on without unecessary risk

Praise God from whom all blessings flow, praise Him all creatures here blow, praise Him above ye heavenly host, praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. So much to praise our Father God for; we are enjoying that winning feeling against the COVID-19 virus, we are enjoying some rain and the farmers are watching their crops coming through and paddocks turning a very green colour. Ah, we worship an amazing and loving God.

Life is moving on, but at what price. We see in the media that everyone is itching to break free from the isolation and get back to the way we were. Especially people who have decided to get on board with protests about racial discrimination. Now don’t get me wrong, I support the ideals that these discriminations are wrong and the situation needs to be rectified. But to so seriously breach distancing rules is also extremely wrong and putting the whole drive to control COVID-19 at risk; potentially bringing about further and harsher isolation rules. These approaches then allow other people to get in on the band wagon and run their own agenda – hence the riots and looting that was splashed across our TV screens. Again; don’t get me wrong – in God’s eyes ALL lives matter. As God’s children we must also have the mindset that ALL lives matter. We are also seeing across Australia how people are pushing for social distancing to be scrapped so they can go to the football, nightclubs, bars etc. Much of these attitudes are self-driven without true consideration of the well-being of the many vulnerable people we have in our midst. Galatians 5:19-21 talk of characteristics of the sinful heart and selfish ambition is in that list. Verse 21 finishes that those people will not inherit the kingdom of God. Philippians 2:3-4 speaks of not living by selfish ambition but by considering others. James 3:16 (aren’t there some fascinating 3:16’s in the scriptures) reminds us where envy and selfish ambition reside so do disorder and every evil practice. Let us all keep our eyes steadfastly focussed on God for His directing and guidance.

Enough of me preaching, that comes shortly. We do need to move forward but let’s use caution and consider others and help keep them alive.

We have moved the next step forward with getting Kapunda Uniting Care functioning again, Synod have now approved the members for our Board and they will meet soon. If you know anyone who might be available to help as a volunteer please let us know their name and contact details. They do not necessarily need to be a church member (although they could be from another church) but they need to get all the clearances (we can do that through Synod if needed).

The Winds of Change Keep Blowing.

I don’t know how much you keep up with the news from local, national and international. If you don’t that is ok, and sometimes watching it on the tele I wonder why I do. There are times when we see some really good and encouraging things on the screen. But, sadly, too much of it is not so good. But let’s see one really encouraging piece of news just a couple of nights ago. The New Zealand Prime Minister has stated that because their country has no active COVID-19 cases, and have not had for a period of time, they are lifting all social distancing effective next Friday. What a gigantic step forward. Congratulations New Zealand. Just shows that with patience, perseverance and enough sense to follow the guidelines that life can return to some greater level of normality. Come on South Australia, and Australia, we have started well, now let’s keep going. With the same patience, perseverance and tenacity we can be there soon, too.

On the opposite, we have seen the issue of racial non-acceptance turn into brutality that then has got out of hand around the world. Now I am against the senseless death that happened but for it all to turn into the actions of violence, destruction and looting that has eventuated is human beings, being uncontrolled. Unfortunately a very legitimate protest has been hijacked by other people to feed their own agenda. The protest movement has been titled ‘Black Lives Matter’. Now please do not misread me; I am opposed very strongly to racism. But this movement, as important as it is, stops short of the Biblical standard. The Bible clearly teaches that ALL lives matter. As Christians we should oppose any and all discrimination regardless. Colour, background, language, wealth or lack of, or any other form of discrimination has no place in Christian living. In God’s eyes all people are equal and equally valuable.  In Job 34:19 Elihu (one of Job’s friends) was saying that God is not wrapped in who the person is or their position in life because God created them all. In Acts 10:34-35 Peter was talking that he had come to recognise that God has no partiality between people. We could fill up pages of Bible quotes to reinforce that statement, but I will refrain from that as the message will come later. For now let’s keep these people and situations very much in our mind and prayers.

Those who have access to watching some of the online church services; we hope you are enjoying the messages and music available. Jenny and I have also been really enjoying ‘Songs of Praise’ on ABC on Sunday mornings. I know some people are taking in that program and enjoying the music, various programs that some of the churches use to reach their local community, and the history of the region. What an enlightening and nurturing program.

Let us all continue to read and meditate on God’s Word as we patiently wait to be able to gather in worship and freedom of the social distancing. As long as we continue to follow these restrictive guidelines from our leaders and experts that day is on its way in the foreseeable future; until then keep praying for and encouraging each other.

The Saints Go Marching In

Yes, it is true. The way is beginning to clear for us to hold worship services in our churches again; all be it with certain guidelines that need to be complied with. We have received an email from our General Secretary, Rev. Felicity Amery, giving us the guidelines. The Kapunda Church Council members are currently having some online discussion on how and when to move forward. Eudunda and Robertstown congregations need to have your own conversations. As we start to move forward we also need to keep in mind some of our more vulnerable people and what happens for them, as they may still be under medical advisement not to join such gatherings. We still need to keep them involved too. Let’s all prayerfully consider all aspects of our future.  Then let’s go marching onward to His glory and honour, but let’s not leave anyone behind.

Talking with a number of people over the last couple of weeks, we have had discussion on the fact that through this time of shut-down they have enjoyed more available time of reflection and contemplation. They have had time to think on many things that have gone and many things that could come. I’m reminded that too often we get so busy that we neglect much of our meditation and contemplation time. Sometimes it is difficult to get it all in when we only have twenty four hours per day. Yet the scriptures continually encourage us to achieve our consistent and persistent time with Him daily. All the way through both Testaments we read of meditation. Psalm 77 is a great example all the way through; verse 12 ‘I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds.’  Psalm 119 is another great chapter for being guided in meditation. Verse 11 is well known, ‘I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.’ But verses 14-16 are also great ‘I rejoice……..I meditate……I delight…..I will not neglect your word.’ I’ll let you read the rest of those verses. This is not the message for this week, that is coming on the next page, but just some thoughts to mull over.

As life keeps changing, how we can do things, how many we can meet with, we need God’s continued love, grace and patience. None of us have truly lived through the likes of this pandemic. We can read of other plagues and really serious viruses that have hit before, but I doubt that many, if any, of us have gone through it. I personally, you may disagree, think our governments and denomination have handled it well for the well-being of us all. Let’s keep praying for them, they don’t have an easy task. Keep praying for each other and give someone different a call each day.

Enjoy your day, and every day, until we see Jesus face to face.

Still moving to our next future.

Welcome to this week’s pack. It is amazing how the days fill up and click over with such regularity. Seems that we enjoy Sunday, and however we choose to worship at the moment, and before we know it we’re back to Sunday again. Even more frightening when young people are telling us that they are finding time flying by. There was I, thinking it is only an older person’s malady.

Our ‘new normal’ that is being talked of: what will it really be? Even the people using that terminology can’t tell us, but they do assure us that it will be different to what we have been used to. To that we should kindly and graciously thank them for the details. It is interesting though that it matters not what we had or what will be in the future that God never changes. Hebrews 13:8 reminds us that ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.’ Ecclesiastes 1:9 encourages us with the words ‘What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again, there is nothing new under the sun.’  Isn’t it really encouraging that, no matter what, God never changes. And that in principal nothing is new; maybe the dressing that it comes in is different to before.

Bronwynne, we need to keep acknowledging your work on the Light Notes each week. We know how you struggle sometimes with some of the articles, but it always comes out just what God wants. I have had more feedback concerning the story a couple of weeks ago, the story of ‘Jeremy’s Egg’. The story this last week of the “The birth of the song ‘Precious Lord’”. So many of the great songs and hymns of worship have their roots in tragedy.

A few people keep asking me when we’ll be holding church again. I wish I could give a definitive answer. I am watching emails every day waiting for some guide from Synod so we can let you know. I am sure Rosy is doing the same. Please keep waiting and praying.  Also keep praying for all of our people who are on their own and locked in by instruction from their doctors; perhaps even a phone call to them to let them know you are praying for them. This is a great opportunity to share your faith with some of those people.

Some words of a song that I enjoy. These words are only the chorus and can be found in the “All together again” (blue book) number 127.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,

Because He lives, all fear is gone;

Because I know He holds the future;

And life is worth the living, just because He lives.

Onward Christian Soldiers

I hope you know the words of that great old hymn. We keep being reminded of always being in a war. We are in a war against this virus, and according to the experts, as a nation we are winning. The scriptures remind us that we are in a war against sin and all the influences that come within that realm. There has been a post circulating on Facebook showing God and satan talking and satan was gloating that he had closed churches right around the world. God replied that yes satan had but He (God) had opened a church in many more homes.

Isn’t it interesting how life has changed during this COVID shut down? I was just talking with my brother and apologising for missing his birthday. He has lost track of what day it is, while I’m ok with the day but I’ve lost track of date. Not having appointments, the date has slipped out of recognition. But having minimal appointments has also given me time for other things – like more relaxation. I hope you are gaining many good things from this isolation time. Maybe more time with your partner, or time to catch up with friends by phone or other means, or more Bible reading and prayer time. All great things to help refresh us in body, mind and spirit.

I hope you carefully and prayerfully read the Light Notes each week. Bronwynne puts considerable effort and much prayer into selecting the stories for every week. A really great job, thank you Bronwynne. Last week the story of Jeremy’s Egg really had impact on a number of people. Thank you for that feedback. To receive that response is very encouraging and helps to continue when times are difficult. So don’t forget to reach out (keep your social distance) and support and encourage each other. There are many scriptures that exhort us to do just that, not only in the times of pandemic. We never know when someone is down, a little word or a note/card can bring an extra spring to their step. A chap we know in Adelaide has some mental health issues, but there can be no doubt of his faith and salvation through Christ Jesus. He sends people cards, about 200 per year, just to spread that bit of loving encouragement.

Some know that Peter Deuter is in hospital. The great news is that he has been moved to Kapunda for some rehab work. All being well he will be home on Friday this week. It is exciting to see God healing and strengthening Peter’s body. Peter is really grateful to all the medical staff. Also the Uniting Church Chaplin at the Lyell Mac Hospital was very supportive. So a thank you to Dianne Muir too.

Remember to keep safe and healthy. Keep your distance but stay together in God’s Spirit. In the words of Psalm 23 ‘The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want…..you finish it.

Light at the end of the tunnel

Great news. Some of the restrictions are being lifted. Great news. If the COVID-19 does not break out again further restrictions will be lifted progressively. We, as God’s children, need to continue in prayer that this disease will remain controlled in this state and our nation. Praise God that He has been answering prayer over the last few (seems like a lifetime) weeks, in more ways than just the virus. In many places throughout the world the virus appears to be on the back foot; much needs to be done in other parts of the world. Sadly, we read that this has also heightened the persecution of some of God’s children in other places; please keep praying for those persecuted Christians.

Some of the experts are using the good old phrase of ‘light at the end of the tunnel’. It makes me think of the number of times that Jesus spoke of light. Sometimes He didn’t use the word but He referred to the light. If we keep our eyes focused on God’s light through Christ Jesus then we will always have ‘light at the end of our tunnel’. John 8:12 where Jesus said “I am the light…” He also said (Matthew 5:14) “You are the light…”  As God’s children we can help others through these ongoing times of change and adjustment, and some of these changes will be with us for a long time.

I have been receiving feed-back from some people as to how they are sharing their ‘light’ with others who they come in contact with. I am encouraging them to put it in writing so we can include their praise into future packs. Have you got a story to add or a scripture that has taken on a new meaning for you? Please share them with us.

Let me remind you of giving your offerings. You can, if you have the technology and skill to use it, pay direct to the church bank account. BSB105-006 and Account number 057080840. Just make sure you include Offering into the paid by or reference field. There are ways that cash offerings can be made but more on that soon. I encourage you to keep making your offerings as part of your worship to our loving Father God. I also encourage you to continue to give your offerings because we need to make sure we have our properties properly cleaned and we have hand sanitizer available. These things make our cleaning of properties slightly more costly. But it must be done to hold meetings again. We are getting more information and guidance from Synod on these matters.

Included in today’s pack is a letter from our Moderator, Bronte Wilson. Please read and see what response God places on your heart. Toward the end of the letter you will find a reference to supporting a Uniting Care Emergency Relief Centre near you. Let me advise that Kapunda Uniting Care is functioning but limited at the moment. Uniting Care Executive Officer, Tim Hodgson, is doing all he can to get us fully operative ASAP.

Keep praying for each other and those around us. Be fully assured and confident that God hears and answers every prayer. It is His promise and He keeps His word. Be devoted in reading the scriptures and praying and then let us watch God at work in our communities.

Until we meet again.  Allan aljkap7@gmail.com or 0426682379.

Announcements : Welcome

And our journey continues.

It’s an old cliché that no two days are the same. That has taken on a new meaning in this time of COVID-19. This horrific virus has certainly changed our days and changed our lives forever. A new catch phrase is the ‘New Normal’. What that really means is anyone’s guess; but we do know that what we always knew as normal before has gone and may never completely return. For some of us with a different sense of humour it conjures interesting images of sitting in church worshipping together but at a distance. Maybe some of you who are cartoonists can forward your images to us for inclusion in our weekly pack. One really fantastic change that has happened is the rain. What good rainfall we have recorded in our gauges over the last couple of weeks. Poking around in my garden it is exciting to see how this rain has soaked in and getting around the roots of our plants, especially our trees. Praise God that it appears to be giving our farmers a great start to the season.

Talking of God giving good things to His people isn’t it good for many parents that our schools are able to return. What is good for parents has put additional pressure and stress on our teachers. See our teachers were under pressure at the end of last term to suddenly provide lessons on line. Most schools were not truly equipped for that to happen so quickly. Teachers worked extremely hard to get their heads around it then put it into action then – wow the children are back in school; most of them. So now many teachers are dual teaching – online and in class. Please constantly pray for our teachers that they will be able to handle all the demands put on them and that God will protect them from the COVID-19 virus. They already get enough bugs and wogs from their students.

Keep praying for our Uniting Care at Kapunda. Unfortunately some people are under the impression that it does not exist anymore. But most definitely we are still functioning. There are some limits on us at the moment but we do have food parcels available for people who are in need. Over the next few weeks more food will be available. If you, or someone you know, are in need of that help, please phone and arrange a pack. If you know someone who cannot pick it up we may be able to arrange delivery. Under the strict guidelines we obviously have to work within social distancing rules. The number is Sue on 0429962939. This applies to people in Eudunda and Robertstown, not just Kapunda.

My devotional material at the moment is on the topic of ‘Fire’; focusing much on the fire of God’s Spirit. It is being a great reminder of the tremendous person of our triune God and the empowerment He gives His people. He also supplies all we need, sometime not what we want, but always what we need. Those needs include a home to live where we can be safe and warm. Being warm is vital now the weather is getting cooler. Keep in touch with each other, with open and encouraging communication. Let me encourage you to contact some people you would not normally phone or email. That contact will help keep them warm knowing people realise they exist.

Keep praying for each other and those around us. Keep contributions coming for our weekly pack. Email them or send them in. Allan aljkap7@gmail.com or 0426682379

Good News Week ….again.

I keep looking around and am continually amazed at how great is our God. Then the words of our glorious hymn come to mind, ‘How great thou art’. So much is happening day by day that we find that we get to see clearly our gracious Lord God at work. Here in SA we seem to be clocking up day after day with no new Virus cases reported. Our politicians are starting to talk of easing some of our restrictions. Praise God for answered prayer!

We have received some encouraging rain, with more forecast over the rest of this week. I’m sure I can see many farmers smiling, possibly the biggest grins they have had for quite a while. Speaking with a couple of our resident farmers it is now encouraging enough for them to start seeding. Praise God for answered prayer!

Over the last week we have been given cash and stamps to help with the mail out of our weekly pack. This has come from several people, and we thank you for your generosity. This has covered the cost of postage for five weeks. This is encouraging. We currently email, snail mail, and hand deliver 48 packs per week that I am aware of. Some people let me know of other people who they believe would appreciate a pack and so the number is on the increase. Please keep those names and addresses coming. Let me share the note from Kay Voigt received this week.

To – Allan and our Worship Leaders.

Thank you so much for the weekly pack, very much appreciated; especially over the “Easter” weekend. Please find enclosed a few stamps to assist with the “Message” mailout.

God Bless. Kay Voigt.

Thanks for the note, Kay. Others have been equally supportive and encouraging. As we watch God using our little pack each week to encourage and build His family and His kingdom we have every reason to keep saying; Praise God for answered prayer!

I rather enjoy the words of Psalm 33 (I’ll let you read it for yourself). It is a great Psalm of worship; recognising the holiness, righteousness, might and authority of Our Father God over all that exists. He is a glorious and gracious Father who reigns supreme over all creation and all that is in the world right now. Often we don’t see or recognise what He is doing or why. We have the privilege of daily seeking Him and His guidance. The Psalmist wrote from the depths of his/her heart. The writer knew God personally and could know without doubt that God saw everything – the good, the bad and the ugly – God doesn’t miss any of it. Yet when we latch onto seeing things through God’s eyes we can only say; Praise God for answered prayer!

Also this week I have been privileged to see God at work in lives at real time. I’ll let you read about that a little further in. Please share your stories with us all so we can rejoice with you and with our Father in His ongoing and never-ending love for us all.

Keep in contact with each other. Encourage and nurture each other. Share your Saviour with others around you. Allan Fahlbusch aljkap7@gmail.com or 0426682379.

Announcements

Another week has gone by and we are still in our lock down and maintaining our social distancing. We should be really proud of ourselves that we have achieved this for so long. Here in our own state we seem to be on the winning team with way less confirmed cases of COVID-19 being found. We appear to be winning the battle against this unseen but devastating foe.

We have celebrated Easter and Anzac is right on our doorstep. In both of these we celebrate sacrifices made on our behalf. Over many years and numerous war zones our freedom to live in this great land has been won at an enormous price in lives lost and/or badly damaged; not discounting the mental and emotional trauma for many others in families that have lost loved ones. Let us never forget those men and women. Nor should we forget the price that Jesus paid on our behalf so that we could have free access to our Heavenly Father; to be forgiven our sins and freely live as God’s children. Our freedom always has a price – usually paid by others. In the case of our battle with COVID-19 we are all paying some price.

Enduring our current situation of social distancing and creating isolation, I was praying recently for the persecuted Christians around the world. So many of them rarely get to enjoy the physical association and closeness with another believer in worship like we do. Many of them fear for their lives on a daily basis; yet those believers continue to multiply in numbers. How do they do it when they cannot gather in groups each Sunday? It is simply by sharing their faith – love, care, goods etc – with their neighbours even though they could lose their life for doing so. I’m not saying that it is easy for them to share their faith with others, but somehow they do it. We should be encouraged to share with others around us right now. How can we share our faith with others around us? I think of the new believers in the early church as we find in the New Testament and the innovative ways they showed Jesus in their words and actions. How inventive can we be?

I keep hearing of some of us and the ways we are communicating with others. Cynthia, in the Hostel at Eudunda, shares her weekly pack and some of the old hymns with other residents. Rosy has sent out Messy Church packs to our Messy Church families. Our Facebook page is very active – if you are a Facebooker then go to Light Uniting Church on Facebook and like it then follow us. Who knows you may have something to share there.

Now some of us have missed not being able to give our offerings for a few weeks and the money is burning a hole in our pocket. You can give by Bank Transfer using the following:  BSB105-006 and Account number 057080840. Please insert “Offering” in the paid by or reference field. Roger does not need to know who paid. For those who prefer cash offerings we will work on how to organise that so we can all maintain our social distancing and safety.

Until we see each other face to face again keep safe and healthy and remember each other in prayer. Keep in contact with each other with support and encouragement.
